In every age comes a saga so meaningful, so heroic, that it gives the world pause, and causes intense introspective reflection in not only the gaming community, but throughout humanity as a whole.
The Bard’s Tale ARPG, is not that game.
However (!) it is the tale of a snarky Bard (who shall remain nameless for the duration of this telling and is no way related to any sort of legal complications involving a certain other Bard’s Tale which we now have the rights to but didn’t when this story was originally told in 2004). *ahem* This particular Bard is an ordinary and vulgar sort, with the exception of one special skill: when he plays his lute he has the ability to summon … a rat! That’s it. A rat. It’s a very nice rat though, if that makes any difference.
Anyway, we digress, and we’ll get down to it: The Bard’s Tale ARPG is a classic in its own right; with fast-action combat, a hilarious cast of characters, a sprawling game world, and top-notch voice acting by Cary Elwes (The Bard), and narration by the legendary Tony Jay.
In addition to The Bard’s Tale ARPG being inXile’s very first game, it’s also the last game of the existing Bard’s Tale series joining Xbox Game Pass on Xbox and PC. Furthermore, as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, your saves and achievements live across both Xbox and Windows 10 PC platforms, as well as allowing you to purchase the game once and play on both platforms. With the Nintendo Switch, you'll be able to take this action-comedy on the road, and with integrated Xbox network functionality, you can keep that gamer score rolling no matter which system you play on!
Did we mention this was an Action Role Playing Game? Yes, we absolutely did, but we just did it again as a rhetorical question to underscore it—we really want to get that point across. In addition to slinging snark or politeness as you see fit, you’ll be able to adapt your character through the allocation of skills and skill points you earn, and Bard songs you'll learn. Along with all the fun things you’ll be able to swing, husk, flail, parry, pluck, and drink, you’ll also have the accompaniment of various magical creatures and compatriots who will be all too willing to follow you in your adventures to wherever you want to go… which in reality is where we want you to go, and may end at a place you don’t expect to go. Or maybe you’ve played this before and you already know where you’ll go. In that case, don’t spoil it for those who haven’t played this yet; it just wouldn’t be proper.
The Bard’s Tale ARPG: Remastered and Resnarkled arrives on Xbox One and is accessible with Xbox Game Pass for Xbox and PC, as well as Nintendo Switch with Xbox network integration on June 18. So grab your lute and your flagon and prepare to snark with the best of them. And remember, you’re not out to save the world, but you just might have to!
